Illitch Shows Support for Big 3

April 8, 2009 – 9:31 pm

GM couldn’t afford the advertising for the fountain at Comerica Park, so instead of finding someone else to advertise, Illitch decided that Ford, GM and Chrysler would all be featured on the fountain with a note about the Tigers supporting the auto companies.

It’s a different sort of thing, but I think this goes a little to show why hockey players will stay in Detroit for less money. Illitch seems to be a truly nice rich guy.

So Ilitch told his people to thank the potential paying customers, but to say that the centerfield fountain this year was spoken for. It would be the feature site for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

So starting with the home opener this Friday afternoon, the Chrysler, General Motors and Ford logos will be on an equal plane above the fountain. And beneath those logos will be a few new words:

“The Detroit Tigers support our automakers.”

Oops!

April 5, 2009 – 12:20 am

Oops! Looks like they set a few fires tonight. :)

East Lansing — Authorities extinguished three small fires and made about 20 arrests in neighborhoods around Michigan State University’s campus as thousands of revelers took to the streets to celebrate the college’s unexpected victory in the NCAA Tournament semifinals Saturday night.

The arrests were for arson, indecent exposure, public intoxication and disorderly conduct, said Lt. Kevin Daley of the East Lansing Police. The fires were quickly extinguished, authorities said.

Monroe War of 1812 site now part of U.S. parks system

April 4, 2009 – 11:39 am

I get that this is a cool thing to happen, but will it really generate “stimulus” in our local economy? I don’t see as where it would be a big tourist draw.

A project to turn the River Raisin Battlefield in Monroe into a world-class tourist attraction got a huge boost Monday when President Barack Obama signed a bill that designates the War of 1812 site as part of the National Park System.

“We just acquired the ultimate brand in heritage tourism,” said Monroe County Historical Society President William H. Braunlich.

Monroe Mayor Mark Worell said the battlefield will be a welcome economic force in the area.

“This will be a stimulus to our local economy,” he said. “It will mean tourist dollars, including spin-off dollars for restaurants and hotels.”

Fleeing Michigan

April 4, 2009 – 11:20 am

It’s sad, but I’m not at all surprised. I doubt if I was graduating now that I’d have any choice but to leave.

Half of Michigan’s college grads now leave the state within a year of graduation, taking with them their diplomas and the talent needed to help rebuild Michigan’s economy.

Obamas Paying for White House Renovations

April 1, 2009 – 10:20 pm

As it should be…

Barack and Michelle Obama have sensibly decided not to use taxpayers’ money to renovate theirs. New presidents are allotted $100,000 to overhaul the White House residence and the Oval Office, and the Obamas hired Hollywood decorator Michael S. Smith known, per his site, for mixing “Old World classicism with very contemporary settings”. But the First Couple isn’t spending that money. “They are not using public funds or accepting donations of goods for redecorating their private quarters,” says Camille Johnston, director of communications for the First Lady. Nor is the couple, who reported $4.2 million in household income in 2007 tax returns, using money from the White House Historical Association
